AWS EC2 Mac Alternative With Monthly Pricing

Prices checked by the MacHerald team

If you keep a Mac running all month, a monthly Mac mini host costs far less than AWS EC2 Mac. An EC2 mac-m4 host is $1.23 an hour, about $898 for a month. MacHerald rents a dedicated Apple M6 Mac mini for $99 a month, or $169 with 24 GB of memory. AWS is the better deal for short, occasional jobs.

AWS prices are On-Demand Dedicated Host rates for US East (N. Virginia) from the AWS public price list. The Savings Plan figure uses the "up to 44%" discount AWS advertises for a 3-year commitment. Monthly figures assume 730 hours.

The Break-Even Point

At $1.23 an hour, an EC2 M4 host costs more than MacHerald Base once you've used it for about 3.4 days in a month. Against Premium it's about 5.7 days.

If you leave the host on so builds can start at any hour and caches stay warm, you pay the full $898, idle hours included.

Releasing the host doesn't save as much as it looks. Each new allocation starts another 24-hour minimum, so a host you start every weekday for a two-hour build still costs $29.52 a day.

When to Stay on AWS

Stay if your builds need to reach private resources inside a VPC, or if your security team requires IAM roles on every machine. AWS also has hardware we don't: M4 Pro, M4 Max, and M3 Ultra hosts, plus 10 Gbps networking. And if you only build for a day or two before a release, the hourly price is hard to beat.

When a Monthly Mac Makes More Sense

Pick a monthly Mac when it's on every day for CI, a remote desktop, or a long-running service, or when you'd rather pay one fixed bill than watch a usage line item. You also get an M6 instead of an M4, bandwidth included, and no minimum term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AWS EC2 Mac cost per month?

An EC2 mac-m4 Dedicated Host costs $1.23 an hour On-Demand in US East (N. Virginia), checked October 24, 2026. Left on for a full month of 730 hours, that's about $898, before storage and data transfer.

Why does EC2 Mac have a 24-hour minimum?

AWS says the 24-hour minimum is there to comply with the Apple macOS Software License Agreement. Even a 10-minute job on an M4 host is billed as a full day, about $29.52.

When is AWS EC2 Mac cheaper than a monthly Mac mini?

When you use it for only a few days a month. At $1.23 an hour, an M4 host passes the $99 MacHerald Base price after about 3.4 days of use, and the $169 Premium price after about 5.7 days.

Can I use a MacHerald Mac with my AWS builds?

Yes. A MacHerald Mac is a normal macOS host with SSH, so it can run a GitHub Actions, GitLab, Buildkite, or Jenkins runner and push artifacts to S3 with the AWS CLI. It just isn't inside your VPC.
